The Santa Margherita Wine Group renews its sponsorship of the Mille Miglia

This year, the Santa Margherita Wine Group will once again be one of the Main Sponsors of the Mille Miglia (Brescia-Rome-Brescia 19th -22nd May 2016), the annual reenactment of Italy’s most famous motor race which, every year, draws hundreds of drivers from all over the world as well as millions of enthusiasts who line the whole of its course.

Following the experience of the last edition, the “Santa Margherita Team ” will be competing with several cars, in the capable hands of Stefano Marzotto, Alessandro and Sebastiano Marzotto, our CEO Ettore Nicoletto, and the former Formula 1 driver, President of the Automobile Club of Milan and Grand Prix commentator for the RAI, Ivan Capelli.

The decision to support the Mille Miglia as “Main Wine Sponsor” is aimed at recalling and renewing the Marzotto family’s connection with motor racing. This affinity began in the 1950s when Gaetano Marzotto’s four sons – Giannino, Umberto, Vittorio and Paolo – took part in the most prestigious races of the time: from the Coppa delle Dolomiti to the Mille Miglia, from the Monaco Grand Prix to the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Targa Florio.

Giannino Marzotto was the only two-time winner of the Mille Miglia: in 1950 and in 1953, at the wheel of two Ferrari Berlinettas, as well as being the youngest champion (at only 22 years of age) in the history of the competition.

Vittorio Marzotto – then a young parliamentarian of the Italian Republic – won his Class at the Mille Miglia of 1954, beaten only by the great Alberto Ascari in the overall standings.

The Santa Margherita Wine Group’s presence will be reinforced, too, by other events – in Brescia, at the start of the race and in Rome, at the half-way mark of the competition – which will also feature Vyta Santa Margherita, the "taste corner" which is to be found all over Italy.

The collaboration between the Santa Margherita Wine Group and Mille Miglia began last year, in order to celebrate the eightieth anniversary of the foundation of the estate launched in 1935 by Count Gaetano Marzotto: a winery that was then part of a grandiose “agricultural revolution” project, planned and pursued with great determination in order to create new prospects for the country’s (then very backward) primary sector in the first half of the last century.

Over the years that single holding at Fossalta di Portogruaro in the Province of Venice has become a Wine Group, present in Italy’s most important wine-producing Regions. It is a leading company on the world scale, as well as being the protagonist of certain “innovations” that have changed the image and substance of Italian wine around the globe: Pinot Grigio and sparkling Prosecco.
