In September, in Trentino -Alto Adige, you will be met by the hues of the
wine harvest. This is one of the best periods to visit the region. The castles
scattered along the ridges, in the woods, in the valleys and on the banks of the
lakes play a leading role in this itinerary, as the surviving evidence of a tradition
with age-old roots. The same may be said for the lake of Caldaro - the biggest
in Trentino - which is situated on the wine route. The Kettmeir
winery, one of the oldest establishments in the area, is set in the delightful
lakeside village of Caldaro. Here you can book wine-tasting sessions (tel. 0471-963135)
and sample the best wines in the region from a most decorative stube. Historic
stones You can absorb history today from the stones of a great variety
of castles sprinkled over the ridges, in the woods and valleys of Trentino, in
a setting of vineyards loaded with grapes. The rulers
of the Val di Non The castles in this valley, which has always been
the richest and most highly populated in Trentino, in an itinerary including some
of the most impressive fortifications in the area. Bolzano's
castles Bolzano alone is well worth a visit; however, the tourist
can also find a number of well-preserved castles in the immediate vicinity.
The wine route A wine tourist can follow
Die Weinstrasse, the wine route right down to the banks of the Caldaro lake, in
a series of hills and dales, carpeted with vineyards.
