Introduction

The mountains are changing colour: the white of the snow has given way to the first shy spring hues that tinge the mountain tops more clearly day by day. The most striking is the red blaze of the rocks in the Dolomites as they reflect the glory of sunrise and sunset, best viewed from a mountain refuge near some summit.
Then, immersed in inviolate natural surroundings, you can explore the green of the various Nature Reserves. Take along a pair of binoculars and, if you are quiet and well-concealed, you can admire the birds as they go about their business.
The vivid blue patches of lake form another contrast. There is a lovely lake near Caldaro, the most important grape and wine producing centre in Oltradige, where you can taste some of the best Trentino and Alto Adige vintages at the Kettmeir cellars (tel. 0471-963135).

Nature Reserves in the Dolomites
One third of the entire surface area of the Dolomites is given over to Nature Reserves. There are seven of these protected areas, where all has remained untouched, as nature created it.

Mountain refuges: sweet escape
Nobody will find you here. You can slough off your accumulated layers of stress and really experience the mountain, from the "inside", enjoying the sunsets, the starry nights and dawns over the most beautiful peaks.

Bird watching
The number of bird watching enthusiasts in increasing daily: rising before the crack of dawn, and equipped with hides and binoculars, you can step right into your own documentary. Even in Trentino-Alto Adige.

Mountain cheeses
Trentingrana and Asiago are the best known, but also Nostrano di malga, ricotta (fresh or smoked) and Vezzena are excellent cheeses produced in Alto Adige.
