May, in the Catholic religion, is the month dedicated to the Madonna, while, for
country people, it heralds the reawakening of nature. Our journey through the
land of Chianti Classico unwinds amidst religious architecture, natural beauties
and the lively celebrations established by Tuscan traditions. The hills of this
renowned wine-producing district are at their best during this season: vivid colours
further enhance the magnificent rolling countryside, where parish churches, farms
and castles mark out the landscape, popping out, sometimes unexpectedly, from
behind clumps of oaks and cypresses. Last but not least, May also means the Florence
Music Festival (Maggio Musicale), an important event which brings opera, ballet
