Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio celebrates its 50th Anniversary at Vinitaly 2011

In 1961, Santa Margherita released to market for the first time its Alto Adige Pinot Grigio from off-the-skins vinification of pinot grigio grapes only.
Today, half a century on, we know that 1961 was an exceptional year. That wine became one of the emblems of Italian wine around the world, launching the planet-wide popularity of Italian Pinot Grigio.

The Pinot Grigio phenomenon continues to engage the interest and attention of increasingly broad sectors of the wine-consuming public, consolidating its role as one of the motors that drive the development of Santa Margherita, and indeed the whole of Italy’s wine industry.
We at Santa Margherita, aware of the role that our Pinot Grigio plays in the context of Italian wine production, have chosen to celebrate this 50th anniversary at Vinitaly with opportunities to compare and reflect on future scenarios in the next few years, as well as with various convivial moments.
On Friday 8 April 2011, Santa Margherita – Gruppo Vinicolo is organising, in collaboration with VeronaFiere, some particularly significant events.

Conference – “Italian Pinot Grigio and the Challenge of the World Market: History and Prospects”

As part of the celebrations for Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio’s 50th anniversary, on the occasion of Vinitaly 2011 Santa Margherita is organising, in collaboration with VeronaFiere, a conference on the subject of: “Italian Pinot Grigio Italiano and the Challenge of the World Market: History and Prospects”, a major opportunity to discuss and understand the directions of future development for the variety.
The debate, which promises to be enthralling given the prestige and competence of the speakers, will tackle Italian Pinot Grigio-related issues, including grape production, winemaking, markets and production chain management, from Italian and international perspectives. Subjects and speakers:

  • Origins, Characteristics and Trends in World Plantings of Pinot Grigio
Prof. Attilio Scienza - Faculty of Agriculture - University of Milan

  • Pinot Grigio Production Styles
Prof. Roberto Zironi - Faculty of Agriculture - University of Udine

Tasting: The World of Pinot Grigio, Pinot Grigios from the World

As the winery that created off-the-skins vinification for Pinot Grigio in world markets, Santa Margherita will present, in collaboration with VeronaFiere, a tasting: “The World of Pinot Grigio, Pinot Grigios from the World”, an opportunity to explore and compare wines from Italy and other Pinot Grigio-producing countries, on Friday 8 April 2011 at 3.30 p.m., in the Sala Argento-Palaexpo-Vinitaly.
Wines for tasting were selected because they represent specific areas of origin and a range of terroirs with distinct soil, climate and vineyard management profiles.
Under the guidance of oenologist Donato Lanati and wine critic Giampaolo Gravina, the tasting will give producer wineries a platform from which to facilitate interpretation of the wines
