In spite of the concern caused by the economic crisis, sales of Prosecco di Conegliano-Valdobbiadene continue to rise in the United Kingdom: by over 25% in the period from 2003 to 2007. This rate of growth has taken the U.K. to the sixth spot as regards exports of the sparkling wine from the Province of Treviso. This success was also confirmed recently by that of Vino in Villa London, an event organized by the Producers’ Consortium with the backing of the Veneto Region.
Three hundred journalists, importers and members of the trade met together with 37 producers in order to learn more about the zone and its wines. Vino in Villa London forms part of the marketing operations that the Producers’ Consortium has set in motion in the U.K.. Among these, the Consortium’s decision to support the 2008 U.K. Sommelier of the Year Competition organized by the Academy of Food & Wine, an association that groups together over 40,000 of the nation’s wine trade professionals, is certainly one of the most important. «Prosecco di Conegliano-Valdobbiadene is enjoying ever-growing success, which can be explained by the intrinsic qualities of the product”, states Giancarlo Vettorello, Director of the Producers’ Consortium. “An appealing, easy-drinking profile combined with a moderate level of alcohol has allowed D.O.C. Prosecco to create a style and identity that are unique among sparkling wines. Also, at a critical time for the economy, the excellent value for money that our wine has been able to maintain gives new opportunities for growth. Our D.O.C. demonstrates that you can drink a good, high-quality sparkling wine at a sustainable price. In fact, the average selling price for our wine in the United Kingdom is between 12 and 15 pounds a bottle».
