This area is divided into two distinct zones, both adminstratively and in
terms of characteristic land morphology: on the one hand, the broad valleys of
Trentino (Trento province) give this area the look of an enchanted vine garden;
on the other, the steep slopes and narrow valleys of Alto Adige (Bolzano province)
still make the cultivation of its spectacular, prized varietals a difficult task.
The soil composition and climatic conditions in Trentino-Alto Adige, where
there can be enormous differences between day and night temperatures, give the
wines of this region the special freshness and unusual richness of bouquet for
which they are appreciated around the globe. Santa Margherita's main products
come from these areas. A unique area of the Alto Adige region is the area
lying around Lake Caldaro, where Kettmeir
Winery is located, because it enjoys a characteristic microclimate caused by
warm air moving up the Adige river valley at certain times of year.
